What is Bamini Font and Why Does It Look Like English?
Before Unicode was universally adopted in operating systems, Indian languages lacked native digital representations. Early desktop publishing (DTP) operators in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka used Bamini, an ASCII-based font encoding developed in Jaffna.
Instead of storing real Tamil letters, Bamini assigned Tamil glyphs to standard Latin keyboard keys. For instance, the English letter f was styled to look like "க", and the semicolon ; acted as the pulli (்). If you open a Bamini document on a computer that does not have the Bamini TTF font installed, the text appears as random English characters like "jkpo;" instead of "தமிழ்".

The trickiest part of converting Bamini to Unicode is vowel-sign reordering. In typewriter and Bamini fonts, the vowel sign for "e" (ெ) is typed before the consonant (e.g. nf = ெ + க = கெ). In modern Unicode, the consonant code point is stored first, followed by the vowel marker (க + ெ = கெ).
Furthermore, compound two-part vowels like கொ (e + aa) and கோ (ee + aa) consist of prefix and suffix marks in Bamini (nfh). Our algorithmic parser automatically detects these sequences and reconstructs canonical Unicode graphemes.
